Firstly, we need learn more about the four theories below and learn what is mind map, how to use it by ourselves;
And then, post your understanding and anything else you want to share with group members here;
Tomorrow, let's have a group discussion to have a talk.
Also, I find a nice video to teach how to use MindMeister

Our reflections
Zhao Meng (Phoenix) Through the mindmap, our group figure out the different pedagogy of different learning theory, and make connect between information technology. I put my focus on the cognitive science whcih is my undergraduate thesis subject. Cognitive psychology, revolved from the behaviourism, regards the information processing of human brain as that of computer, and can briefly divide the whole process into input, coding, saving and output(Dowd, E. T. Clen, S. L. & Arnold, K. D., 2010). New information will automaticlly connect with old information and knowledge. Short-term memory is the shallow level connect with old knowledge, and if learners hope to transfer the short-term to long-term, then the deeper connect should be built with complicated knowledge web in mind. It will lead to the construction of mind map. For example, if learners learn a new word “freeze”, most of them will come up with the old word “free” right away, this is the shallow level memory processing. If teacher wants to make it long-term memory, some methods such as picture, audio and video can be applied to the teaching. Paivio, who is a famous psychologist, thinks that simultaneously processing knowledge and picture can enhance study effect. In my opinion, this study effect is the outcome of deep level memory processing. In general, visual memory can be better kept in mind than language memory. It is said that a picture worth thousands of words, picture language can be remembered easier. And this process of mind map is called knowledge visualization. This is how this learning theory connects with information technology. Reference:[1] Dowd, E. T. Clen, S. L. & Arnold, K. D. The Specialty Practice of Cognitive and Behavioral Psychology[M].Washington: American Psychological Association.2010. | Wang Zhen (Jane) I am really interested in behaviorism ,although many people think that behaviorism learning theory has been out of date,I think,personally, it still could give us lots of inspiration. Behaviorism emphasizes observable behavior changes, it uses reward and punishment to enhance positive learning behaviors and decrease negative learning behaviors.Some people think it is inhumane.But i have to say reward and punishment are necessary,especially for children and teenagers,because those students are too young to have enough learning motivation and self-control ability .So, in order to solve this problem ,we should give them reward to attract their attention and make them get a sense of accomplishment .Meanwhile,we also could use punishment to give them proper tension,which are able to help them build self-control ability. last week ,we talked about why people like to play computer games. The answer is people can get a sense of achievement from games.But,we all know that even people fail to pass a game level,they are still willing to try again .Actually what people get from games not only relaxation and achievement, but also pressure and challenge .So I think things, like pressure and challenge,which come from punishment are not harmful to people’s learning.Therefore,I think about exam,I want to ask whether we can change examination into a kind of computer game? |
Jialing Zhu (Joyce) We discussed the four theories of learning last week, but it is not an easy thing for me to understand. However, my member partner give me a lot of help, so I really appreciate them! The four theories go through Behaviorism (which is known as S-R model and the experiments by Skinner), Cognitive, Constructive and Social Cultural. Based on Behaviorism, we can divided it into two parts - positive and negative strengthen, which means we need to strengthen what you do right and lessen what you do wrong. We find some apps used this theory to help people remember words or forbidden people from wasting time to play phone games. Someone said that the flipped classroom is also kind of Behaviorism applied in ICT, however, it is still to be argued. Cognitive Science, in other word means Information Processing, which we focused on a small part of it, called memory. It is a good question how to transfer shallow level information into deep level. And we find that ming map is such a good way to deal with it. Meanwhile, we learn how to use mindmiester to construct our own mind map. To be honest, it is a really good software to open our mind and do deeper discussion. Our group member are all very excited during the whole discussion. As for constructive, we all know the four stages of Jean Piaget, it is very famous but pay more attention on kids, so we transport our point into Burner’s knowledge frame, which is relevant to discovery study and collaborative study . In this field , a lot of application is found, such as learning platforms and distance learning applications. when we look for social cultural, we found the theories are not as mature as former three do. There is still some debate into part of , so we only choose situation learning to analyze. 3D Animation is no doubt is beat application so far. We only do a little job to analyze these theories and there must be some mistakes and argues into it. However, the group member is now trying our best to do. It is not the perfect but the best one.Looking forward another activities. | Shudan zheng (Cathy) Last week our group held an discussion about the four learning theories and i had a clearer thoughts about different pedagogics as well as how the ITE practices connected to the theories. The process of the four theories is to some extend about how our brains deal with the information. For Skinner’s theory of behaviorism, learners receive the information mechanically. It is a teacher-centered process of forming connection between stimuli and response. What learners do is memorizing rather than understanding. Actually this theory is widely used in ITE, as there are many words reciting APPs can be easily reached on the internet. Take the APP “乐词” designed by New Oriental Education and Technology Group, all learners do is recite by repeating. The APP links to your social network accounts and will post your learning record online so that all of your friends will see how you learned. It’s a honor to be the best learner among your friends list while you will feel a shame to be the least learned one. The cognitive science is the teaching theory more than information receiving, it’s also about outputting. As a teacher-centered method, students learn what teachers present and try to solve the existing problems with what they know. As the pre-existing knowledge is important to this method, connecting what learners already know with the new knowledge, as well as correcting the misconceptions are the vital tasks of teachers. And the useful online tools like Prezi and PowerPoint can be helpful for teachers’ pictorial presentation. And also, using the mind mapping tools like mindmeister orbubble.us can help students get a deeper understanding of what they learned and transform them into useful knowldge, hence to process the shallow level of memory into a deep level. Constructivism is the theory about learners learned by multiple environment, they pick up the information they need and process them into knowledge. Instead of solving the existing problem, they can also find out the problems and try to figure out the answer. Now more and more online education system prefer to use Bruner’s knowledge frame of discovery study and collaborative study, the online public courses like MOOC have provide learners an expanded community where they can learn knowledge and raise questions so they can make progress by discussing with each other. Situated learning is an aspect of social cultural. Now some internet technologies can provide a situation where learners can acquire the knowledge they need. Here i’m gonna share an example about the educational technology using situated learning: https://www.codecademy.com/en/tracks/javascript You click the link and get into the situation that you are a programmer, the guidance will lead you to write some practical program. |
